What are structural insulated panels (SIPs)?

By bonding high performance rigid foam insulation to oriented strand boards results in predictable, resource efficient, and cost effective wood building components. SIPs are used to build wall, roof, and floor systems on all types of buildings.

Why do I end up with a better structure?

SIPs outperform other building methods in almost every category because the insulation is actually a component of a system, instead of just being thrown in when everything else is almost done. 4" SIP walls have been proven to be more energy efficient than 6" stud framed walls. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory conducted a study proving that a 4-inch SIP wall outperforms 2"x4" stick and batt construction, and even edges out 2"x6" construction in terms of thermal performance.

SIPs are the structural elements, therefore there are virtually no studs to cause breaks in the insulation. In the end, you will receive a more comfortable, energy effecient structure that performs superbly in real world conditions. Framed homes with fiberglass insulation are subject to being poorly installed and are sometimes even lacking insulation. Since SIPs join the structural and insulation elements together there are no gaps.

Why do SIPs outperform other houses?

SIP buildings are stronger, more energy efficient, quieter, and draft free unlike stud framing with traditional fiberglass insulation. Fiberglass is even sometimes used for furnace filters because air moves so freely through it. The refrigeration industry uses solid component insulation like our SIPs because of their lack of air movement and energy efficiency. Less air movement translates into less drafts, fewer penetrations for noise, lower energy bills and a comfortable and controllable living environment.

Can I expect a return on my investment?

Absolutely! SIPs are the only upgrade on your home that will ever pay you back. They never need replacement due to wear and tear and will never go out of style. Other upgrades like appliances, light fixtures, countertops, and floor coverings will eventually need replacement. For return on investment, stick-frame and other type of shell construction systems just don't compare to SIPs.

Your SIP package will account for a fraction of your home's cost; usually around 10% or less. These dollars can be made up in energy savings alone very quickly. In the end, the energy savings are quite staggering.
